They mostly mean the same unit
“Porta potty”, “porta john”, “portable toilet” and “portable washroom” all usually describe a standalone plastic unit with a holding tank, a seat and a vent. “Portable washroom” is the term you'll hear most often in Canada; “porta potty” and “porta john” are common everywhere.
Some names come from brands, but rental companies use them interchangeably. When you request a quote, the name doesn't matter — the unit type and the number of units do.
The unit types you can actually rent
These are the options most rental companies offer:
- ✓Standard unit — the basic single-user portable toilet for job sites and casual events.
- ✓Deluxe or flushing unit — adds a foot-pump flush and often a hand-wash sink.
- ✓Accessible unit — larger, ground-level, with room for a wheelchair and grab bars.
- ✓High-rise or crane-lift unit — built to be lifted onto upper floors of a construction project.
- ✓Hand-wash station — a separate sink unit, often placed next to toilets at food events.
- ✓Restroom trailer — a towable trailer with several stalls, running water, lighting and climate control, popular for weddings and upscale events.
Which one should you ask for?
Job sites usually need standard units plus hand-wash stations, with regular servicing. Public events should include at least one accessible unit. Weddings and formal events often use a restroom trailer so guests have running water and proper lighting.
